General Program Comments
Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is a state of the art medical school utilizing the latest in technology to serve our students. Though our medical school is new, our residency programs have a tradition of excellence spanning over 40 years. WMU supports 10 post-graduate specialty programs, including a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. The Family & Community Medicine residency is a dually accredited program blending the balanced experience of ambulatory, hospital and obstetrical medicine. We have 24 family medicine residents in total with both DO and MD residents filling the program. Our FM residency program functions in a supportive family-friendly environment with exceptional board certified faculty. The ambulatory facility is located at the Family Health Center of Kalamazoo, a Federally Qualified Health Center that has earned the designation of Patient Centered Medical Home. WMU Family & Community Medicine is dedicated to partnering with the Family Health Center to improve the health of our community through preventative medicine and community outreach programs. The facility has on-site laborartory and pharmacy services. We utilize an integrated EMR for patient records, orders, test results, prescriptions and billing. WMed has a state of the art Simulation Laboratory where residents have ample opportunity to practice procedures and improve their techniques. Our FM faculty supervise the in-patient hospital training service utilizing two Level 1 trauma centers, Borgess and Bronson hospitals, both of which use complete EMRs. We are committed to an academic experience of the highest standard. The opportunity for research and scholarship is also available and encouraged. Osteopathic training programs include a Traditional Internship and a dually accredited Internal Medicine residency. In addition to rotation service educational lectures, FM educational conferences are held weekly in a 4-hour block format. OMM hands-on lectures are held monthly for two hours. Our programs participates in monthly MSUCOM Statewide Campus System workshops along with the other osteopathic and dually accredited FM residencies in Michigan.
